Fewer flowers and plants were sold last year than in previous years. According to estimates by Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft mbH (AMI), consumers in Germany spent an average of around \u20ac22 on bedding and balcony plants in 2022, almost 1% less than before the pandemic. The AMI attributes the reluctance to buy plants to rising energy costs and an increasing general reluctance to buy. The uncertainty among consumers was particularly noticeable in autumn, which meant that plant purchases were often neglected.<\/p>\n
Consumers spent a total of around 19 euros on houseplants, with green houseplants exceeding the pre-pandemic result by 7%, while flowering houseplants were 1% lower. The average spend on cut flowers was around 37 euros, which exceeded the pre-pandemic result by around 1%.<\/p>\n
Incidentally, the most popular balcony and bedding plants purchased by Germans in 2022 were heather plants, geraniums and pansies. Balcony and bedding plants, which are in season after spring, slipped down the top 10 lists of crops due to inflation and consumer concerns about rising heating costs, according to AMI. No such changes were seen for houseplants. Among flowering houseplants, orchids, poinsettias and roses remained particularly popular, while cacti and succulents continued to be in demand among green houseplants.<\/p>\n
