Analysis: Students are paying more and more for housing

Students have to dig deeper and deeper into their pockets for their shared room. The average cost of living is currently 414 euros per month. Previously, the average room price was between 389 and 400 euros per month. Munich is at the top of the list when it comes to the price of a room in a shared flat: In the Bavarian capital, students currently pay 680 euros per month for a room in a shared flat, compared to 650 euros per month last time (around 4.62 percent more).

In addition to Hamburg, students also have to dig deep into their pockets in Frankfurt am Main, Berlin and Hamburg. However, rents for shared flats have also become more expensive in Tübingen, Heidelberg, Münster and Freiburg, for example. Students there currently pay average rents of 395 to 464 euros per month. Prices are also expected to continue to rise. At least that is the prediction of those responsible for the analysis by GBI Holding AG, WG-gesucht.de and the Moses Mendelssohn Institute (MMI).

The reason for this is the developments due to the coronavirus pandemic: many students decided to stay at the university location late. Among other things, this last-minute effect led to a price increase at the end of the year. The coronavirus pandemic has also forced some students to extend their studies. For new students, the supply is therefore even tighter. Since the Bafög flat-rate housing allowance is currently 325 euros per month, Dr. Stefan Brauckmann, Managing Director at the MMI, is critical of the developments: "There is an urgent need to remedy this situation by offering more affordable accommodation and tailored support for young people. Otherwise, parental income will determine where they go to university and their future employment prospects even more than before."
